What types of SSD enclosures does ICY BOX offer?
ICY BOX offers enclosures for M.2 NVMe SSDs, M.2 SATA SSDs, and 2.5"/3.5" SATA HDDs/SSDs. M.2 NVMe models connect via USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10 Gbps), USB4 (40 Gbps), or Thunderbolt™ 5 (80 Gbps). All are quality-controlled in Germany and are Plug & Play compatible with Windows®, macOS™, Linux™, and major gaming consoles — no driver installation required.
What is the difference between NVMe and SATA M.2 SSDs — and which enclosure do I need?
NVMe SSDs use the PCIe interface (M-Key connector) and deliver speeds up to 7,000 Mbps. SATA M.2 SSDs use the SATA interface (B+M Key connector) and are limited to around 550 Mbps. ICY BOX NVMe-only enclosures will not work with SATA M.2 drives. Check your SSD label or manufacturer spec sheet for the interface type before purchasing — some ICY BOX models support both protocols.
What M.2 SSD sizes are supported by ICY BOX enclosures?
ICY BOX enclosures support M.2 form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, and 2280 — the number indicates width × length in millimetres. The 2280 (22 mm × 80 mm) is the most common consumer SSD size. Select models also support 22110 (110 mm enterprise drives). Always verify supported form factors in the product datasheet before purchase to ensure your SSD fits correctly.
Do I need to format a new SSD before using it in an ICY BOX enclosure?
Yes — a brand-new SSD has no file system and will not be recognised until formatted. On Windows®, use Disk Management (right-click Start → Disk Management), initialise the disk, and create a new volume. On macOS™, use Disk Utility to erase and format. Use exFAT for cross-platform compatibility between Windows and macOS™, or NTFS for Windows-only use.
What transfer speeds can I expect from an ICY BOX SSD enclosure?
Transfer speeds depend on the connection standard: USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosures deliver up to 1,000 Mbps; USB4 and Thunderbolt™ 3/4 models deliver up to 3,000–4,000 Mbps; the Thunderbolt™ 5 model IB-1980M-80G reaches up to 6,000 Mbps. Real-world speed is also determined by the SSD itself and the host port — the connection always runs at the speed of the slower component.
Is it normal for the SSD enclosure to get warm during use?
Yes — NVMe SSDs generate significant heat during high-speed transfers. Many ICY BOX enclosures use aluminium alloy construction specifically to act as a passive heatsink, dissipating heat away from the drive. Warmth during operation is normal and expected. If the enclosure becomes uncomfortably hot or transfer speeds drop (thermal throttling), ensure it is not placed on insulating surfaces or covered.
Can I use an ICY BOX SSD enclosure with a PS5, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch?
Yes — ICY BOX USB 3.0 and USB-C enclosures work as external storage for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch via their USB ports. For PS5 external media storage, any ICY BOX USB 3.0+ enclosure is compatible and plug-and-play. Note: PS5 internal M.2 NVMe expansion requires a PCIe Gen 4 SSD installed directly into the console — this is separate from external storage use.
Do ICY BOX SSD enclosures work without installing any drivers?
Yes — all ICY BOX SSD and HDD enclosures are fully Plug & Play. No driver installation is required on Windows®, macOS™, Linux™, Android (with OTG support), ChromeOS™, or gaming consoles. Simply connect via USB and the drive appears in your file manager. A new drive must be formatted before first use, but this is a one-time OS-level step, not a driver installation.
