What is a clone station and when do I need one?
A clone station copies all data from one SSD or HDD directly to another without using a computer — useful when upgrading to a larger drive, creating an exact backup, or replacing a failing drive. ICY BOX clone stations support M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, and 2.5"/3.5" SATA drives. They require no software or technical expertise to operate.
Can I clone a larger drive onto a smaller drive?
Yes, but only if the used data on the source drive is smaller than the total capacity of the destination drive. For example, a 1 TB drive with 200 GB of data can be cloned to a 256 GB destination. If source data exceeds destination capacity the clone will fail. For simplicity and reliability, always clone to a drive of equal or larger capacity.
Do I need a computer to clone drives with an ICY BOX clone station?
No — ICY BOX clone stations support offline (PC-free) cloning. Insert the source drive in Bay 1 and the destination drive in Bay 2, hold the clone button until the LED confirms, then release. LED indicators show progress at 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. The process runs completely independently. You can also connect the station to a PC via USB to use both bays as standard external storage.
How long does the cloning process take?
Cloning speed depends on data volume and drive type. NVMe-to-NVMe cloning via USB 3.2 Gen 2 stations runs at 400–900 Mbps — a 500 GB drive typically takes 10–20 minutes. SATA-to-SATA cloning is slower at 100–200 Mbps. ICY BOX clone stations copy only used sectors by default, which is faster and allows cloning to smaller destination drives compared to sector-by-sector mode.
What is the difference between smart clone mode and sector-by-sector cloning?
Smart clone (default) copies only used sectors — faster, destination can be smaller than source capacity. Sector-by-sector mode copies every sector including empty ones, creating a bit-for-bit identical image — requires the destination to be at least as large as the source and takes longer. Use smart clone for everyday drive upgrades; use sector-by-sector for forensic recovery or drive duplication.
Will cloning make the new drive bootable so I can swap it into my Notebook?
Yes — a sector-level clone transfers the full operating system, boot partition, and all files, making the destination drive directly bootable. After cloning, remove the old drive, install the new one, and your Notebook boots as normal. For Windows®: if the OS activation requires reauthorisation after the swap, signing in with your Microsoft account linked to a digital licence resolves this automatically.
