On October 31, it's that time again: little ghosts run from door to door and demand "trick or treat". Halloween is no longer just a spooky celebration for the whole family in America. Here, too, the custom has arrived and become established. Halloween parties with extravagant costumes are very popular and the hollowed pumpkin with glowing eyes is in a Halloween decoration.

Did you know?
The Halloween pumpkin is also called "Jack O`Lantern". The glowing pumpkin face originated in Ireland. The legend says that a crook named Jack tricked the devil several times during his lifetime. Because Jack was not granted admittance to either heaven or hell after his death, he wandered in dark No-man’s-land. From the devil he got a piece of coal from hell, which Jack put into a hollowed-out turnip, which he had with him as a snack. In America, the turnip became the pumpkin, which is also known here.

From where comes Halloween?

Halloween did not originate in America, but in Ireland. In pre-Christian times, the Celts celebrated their harvest on October 31, welcomed the cold season and drove away evil spirits. They believed that on this day the dead were on their way. To keep them away, the Celts lit fires and dressed up. Small gifts in front of the houses were supposed to make the spirits lenient. Irish immigrants brought the custom (Brauch) with them to America, from where it came back to Europe.

Did you know?
The name "Halloween" dates back to the 9th century. The evening before All Saints' Day was called "All Hallows Eve" by the church.

Halloween horror movies

The film industry has also discovered the night of horror for itself. In 1978, the classic "Halloween" with Jamie Lee Curtis hit the cinemas. The story of Michael Myers is an absolute cult among horror fans. But over time, countless films have also been made for the little ones, such as Hotel Transylvania or Monster AG. So, it's only natural to have a scary movie night with friends or family on Halloween and get a little spooky together.
